Kolkata:
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi on Friday morning, sending strong tremors across several parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata. The sudden jolt startled residents, many of whom took to social media to describe it as one of the strongest earthquakes they have ever felt.
Residents Describe Powerful Shaking
People in Kolkata reported that the tremors were unusually intense, with some claiming their buildings shook for nearly 30 seconds.
Recounting the experience, one resident wrote on X:
“This felt like the most intense earthquake of my life. Kolkata was shuddering like a fragile plastic tunnel.”
Another user said:
“That earthquake was strong enough to wake someone up from deep sleep.”
As a precaution, several residents stepped out of their homes and gathered in open areas across parts of the city and surrounding districts.
No Damage or Injuries Reported So Far
Despite the strong shaking, authorities confirmed that no injuries or structural damage have been reported in Kolkata or elsewhere in West Bengal at this time.
Epicentre in Bangladesh; Tremors Felt Across Northeast India
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake:
- Struck 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, Bangladesh
- Occurred at 10:08 am
- Had a shallow depth of 10 km, contributing to stronger surface-level tremors
Tremors were also felt in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
In India’s Northeast, people reported feeling the quake in:
- Dharmanagar (Tripura)
- Tura and Cherrapunjee (Meghalaya)
- Aizawl (Mizoram)
Another Earthquake Recorded Earlier in the Day
Earlier on Friday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan, with the epicentre located at a depth of 135 km, the National Centre for Seismology said. No major damage was reported in that incident either.
