Fire Breaks Out at COP30 Venue in Brazil; 21 Injured, Indian Delegation Evacuated Safely

A fire at the COP30 venue in Brazil injured 21 people and forced thousands to evacuate. India’s delegation, including Minister Bhupender Yadav, was safely moved to a secure zone.

A major fire broke out on Thursday at a pavilion inside the COP30 UN Climate Change Conference venue in Belem, Brazil, injuring at least 21 people and triggering chaos as thousands of delegates rushed to safety. The blaze erupted around midday, sending thick smoke billowing across the conference area, which is hosting global climate negotiations.

Indian Delegation Present During Fire, Moved to Safety

Around 20 members of the Indian delegation, including Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, were present near the affected pavilion when the fire broke out.

Authorities confirmed that:

  • All members of the Indian delegation were quickly evacuated
  • They were escorted to a secure zone within minutes
  • No Indian representative sustained injuries

A spokesperson accompanying the delegation stated that emergency teams responded swiftly, ensuring the safety of all participants from India.

21 People Injured in Chaotic Evacuation

According to Brazilian officials:

  • 21 people suffered injuries, mostly due to smoke inhalation and minor burns
  • Several others experienced panic attacks during the mass evacuation
  • No fatalities have been reported so far

Emergency crews, firefighters, and medical teams were seen battling the flames and assisting injured attendees as chaos unfolded across the venue.

Thick Smoke, Panic as Thousands Rush Out

Eyewitness accounts revealed that thick plumes of smoke filled the event area within minutes, forcing:

  • Delegates to abandon sessions
  • Pavilion workers to evacuate immediately
  • Security teams to divert crowds to alternate exits

The fire forced a temporary shutdown of activities at the affected pavilion, though other areas of the summit continued under heightened security.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

Authorities in Belem have launched a probe to determine the cause of the fire. Early reports suggest:

  • It may have started from an electrical short circuit, though confirmation is pending
  • The pavilion structure, built with temporary materials for the summit, allowed the fire to spread rapidly

Officials said an official statement will be released once the investigation identifies the exact trigger.

COP30 Activities Expected to Resume Gradually

While parts of the venue remain sealed for inspection, organisers say:

  • Sessions outside the damaged zones will resume shortly
  • Safety protocols are being re-evaluated
  • Additional fire units have been deployed as a precaution

The incident has raised concerns about emergency preparedness at large international climate events.
